The Development Education (DE) program stands as a beacon of transformative, experiential learning for credit unions and their system partners. Through immersive events, collaborative learning, and transformative education, the DE program illuminates the development issues that hinder financial freedom and underscores the pivotal role of credit unions in addressing these challenges.

A key aspect of the DE program is its emphasis on building awareness of critical development issues that impede individuals from attaining financial stability. It highlights how credit unions are uniquely positioned to confront these challenges. More than 2,000 individuals from over 35 countries have graduated from the U.S. DE program since its inception in 1982, underscoring the global impact and reach of this educational initiative.

The National Credit Union Foundation has identified 12 pivotal Development Issues that act as interconnected barriers to the well-being and prosperity of the members and communities served by credit unions. These issues encompass a broad spectrum, touching on fundamental areas crucial for the development and stability of individuals and communities:

  1. Savings
  2. Credit
  3. Diversity and Equity
  4. Inclusion
  5. Hunger
  6. Housing
  7. Health
  8. Environment
  9. Education
  10. Employment
  11. Transportation
  12. Technology

David Murphy’s journey through the DE Program offered a profound understanding of these crucial issues, rekindling a passion for addressing systemic challenges that hinder community prosperity. His experience reflects a sentiment shared by DE program alumni—a transformative shift in perspective and an unwavering dedication to mitigating these issues.

The DE program, with its emphasis on these core development issues, not only enlightens credit union professionals but also empowers them to bring about tangible change within their communities. The program equips participants with the tools and knowledge necessary to identify, understand, and actively address these barriers to financial well-being.
