MMCCU President David Murphy had a busy September networking with other credit unions, learning about new industry trends, and advocating for topics important to credit union members.
Healthcare Credit Union Association Annual Conference a Unique Networking Experience
His first conference was at the Healthcare Credit Union Association Annual Conference in Clearwater, Florida. HCUA is a professional association of credit unions that serve healthcare employees and their families throughout the United States. Their goal is to support each other through collaborative efforts. As a conference centered fully around healthcare credit unions, it provides opportunities to learn what’s working for other similar credit unions.
“I was able to capture many perspectives unique to serving healthcare workers,” said Murphy. “It is an amazing opportunity to learn and network.”
Hike The Hill 2023 an Opportunity to Speak with Lawmakers
Murphy also participated in The Wisconsin Credit Union League’s annual “Hike The Hill” event in Washington DC.
Hike the Hill is an annual event in which credit union professionals from across Wisconsin join together to march on Capitol Hill in DC to meet with legislators discussing the topics that are most impactful to credit unions and our ability to serve our members.
“Meeting with legislators as a group allows credit unions to advocate for legislation that is beneficial to the credit union industry and to voice our concerns for measures that would negatively impact our operations and our member’s lives,” said Murphy. “We want legislators to know how the actions they take can impact their constituents’ financial lives.”
Murphy added that credit union members should know that their credit union’s leadership is doing what they can do showcase the benefits of the industry and to advocate for changes that make it easier for members to enjoy these benefits.
“Legislators, on both the federal and state level, cover a wide array of topics that it’s hard for them to be experts in every facet of the daily American’s lives,” he said. “Our goal is simply to provide information that can help them make better informed decisions that can improve or maintain the quality of service credit union members can enjoy in their financial matters.”
More than 40 Wisconsin credit union professionals were represented at the event, and met with the entire State delegation to discuss issues and gain perspective.
CUNA CEO Council Conference Provides Education
Murphy’s last stop was the CUNA CEO Council Conference in Carlsbad, California. This unique opportunity provides an ideal environment to tackle specific challenges CEOs face as a leader. Participants have the opportunity to collaborate with peers, gain insights from nationally recognized experts, and thoroughly examine issues important to credit unions.
“This was a good opportunity to learn other perspectives that we can the incorporate into our organization to better serve members. There was a mix of smaller group conversations, open forum dialogue, CEO panels and thought-provoking presentations, providing fresh insights, effective solutions, and inspiration,” said Murphy. “AI is the big topic right now, specifically examining how can we utilize AI to better serve and protect members.”
Great job, David!
