On Tuesday, January 24, MMCCU President David Murphy, VP of Lending Jerry Litwaitis, and Accountant & HR Specialist Stephanie Rasmussen attended the Wisconsin Credit Union League State Government Affairs Conference (GAC). Held each January, the GAC is a chance for credit unions to join together as a movement and make CU voices heard in Madison.
“Being able to meet with members of the legislature is an important way for our voice to be heard,” said Rasmussen. “It creates a partnership that we can use to advocate for issues that are in the best interest of our members and the community.”
During their time, they met with Senators Patrick Testin and Cory Tomczak, along with Representatives Nancy Vandermeer, Donna Rozar, and John Spiros.
“We discussed furthering protections for financial institutions against elder abuse and the modernization of the credit union statutes, among other topics,” said Murphy.
“This was my first GAC and I was not sure what to expect,” added Rasmussen. “In addition to meeting with lawmakers, I was able to meet other credit union professionals from all over the state. It was amazing to see us all coming together to promote topics that are important for our members.”
“It was great to see how accessible each representative and senator was and how they took the time to listen to our message. It was also amazing to see over 220 credit union professionals come together to represent the credit union movement and spread our message to the Wisconsin Legislature,” said Litwaitis. “I would definitely go to the Wisconsin GAC again and would encourage any credit union professional who has not yet attended the GAC to find a way to go.”
